Network

The CORENET consortium brings together a multidisciplinary and multinational network to develop chemical reservoir computing in microfluidic/analytical devices. The consortium aims to achieve Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4 within this ambitious 4-year Research and Innovation Action that not only mimics biological structures but also use similar physical phenomena.

The academic beneficiaries form a unique group of scientists with a strong track record in prestigious national and EU grants.

They are group leaders in internationally recognised universities, regularly publish in leading journals with demonstrated knowledge in Open Science practices and data management, as well as ample experience in pioneering breakthrough research.

Partners

The AUTONOMOUS UNIVERSITY OF MADRID (UAM) is one of the leading scientific institutions in Spain and, together with the National Spanish Research Council (CSIC), it constitutes a declared International Campus of Excellence (ICE). The BIOHYBRID MATERIALS AND SYSTEMS CHEMISTRY GROUP led by Prof. de la Escosura conducts research on artificial photosynthetic systems, biohybrid materials, prebiotic systems chemistry and the origins of life. The group has a strong expertise in the organic synthesis of biohybrids and confinement of chemical processes, allowing for the development of a wide and diverse toolbox of NA derivatives and their compartmentalisation in NA–lipid vesicles. Prof. de la Escosura is the project coordinator for CORENET and alongside managing the project he will also lead CORENET’s research efforts in system chemistry of synthesis of biohybrid systems and complex replication networks.

RADBOUD UNIVERSITEIT was established in 1923 as the Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen and is now one of the leading academic communities in the Netherlands. Within the Department of Physical-Organic Chemistry, the Huck Research Group focuses on understanding and replicating the physical environment and reaction networks of the living cell. The wide expertise of Huck’s group in microfluidic reactors will contribute to the CORENET project by leading the research efforts on development and use of microfluidic reactors  and by providing the ability to produce controllable microdroplet and hydrogel compartments with various compositions. The Roithova group has world-leading expertise in studying reaction kinetics using mass spectrometry, and has established new protocols for extracting mechanisms as well as rates of catalytic reactions by combining fluidics and mass spectrometry. These methdos a re now being applied to complex reaction mixtures in collaboration with the Huck group.

IBM has maintained a research laboratory in Switzerland since 1956. As the European branch of IBM Research, the mission of IBM Research Europe — Zurich (in addition to pursuing cutting-edge research for tomorrow’s information technology) is to cultivate close relationships with academic and industrial partners, be one of the premier places to work for world-class researchers, to promote women in IT and science, and to help drive Europe’s innovation agenda. The IBM partners brings the needed expertise in silicon manufacturing and AI/Machine Learning modelling for materials/chemistry, with trained experts that understand both data science and physics/chemistry experimentation and analytics, as well as their cutting-edge NANOTECHNOLOGY CENTER.

The mission of the SPANISH NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL (CSIC) is to promote, coordinate, develop and disseminate scientific and technological multidisciplinary research, in order to contribute to the progress of knowledge and economic, social and cultural development; as well as to train researchers and provide advice to public and private entities in these fields. The CSIC team brings to the CORENET consortium an unbeatable analytical and biological data processing capacity, together with metabolomics analysis expertise to analyse the internal state of the network in high detail.

The UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN DENMARK (SDU) welcomed the first students onto the campus in Odense in September 1966, and things have been developing by leaps and bounds ever since. There are five faculties with more than  27,000 students, almost 20% of whom are from abroad. Several international studies document that SDU conducts world-class research and are one of the top fifty young universities in the world. Their expertise in cheminformatics graph grammar tools to infer reaction pathways and mechanisms is central to the CORENET research.
